The morning of 5th December 2016 witnessed the inauguration of the second edition of Winter School on Qualitative Methods for Research in Asia. It was organized by Public Health Evidence South Asia (PHESA), Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal in collaboration Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of Groningen, The Netherlands from the 5th - 9th December 2016 under the aegis of Transdisciplinary Center for Qualitative Methods, Manipal Univeristy, Manipal. The theme for this edition of Winter School was- Embedding Qualitative Research Methods in Health Sciences. The first day began with an introduction to the Winter School, and aimed to address questions regarding qualitative research and qualitative research cycle and give an overview about the various qualitative tools and techniques inn public health research. Breaking the convention, the formal inauguration was carried out during the end of the day by Dr. Neeta Imamdar and the first day was concluded by a keynote address by Prof. Jacques Zeelen on Action Research and the different contexts it is used in. Day two focussed on Focus group discussions and provided insights into designing and conducting a FGD including the drawbacks of the method. In-depth interviews were the topic of discussion on day three and the various challenges faced during in-depth interviews were deliberated. Day four and five focussed on data analysis and writing & presentation of qualitative data respectively. The workshop emphasized on providing hands-on training to the participants and hence included a number of group activities and it was ensured that every session was as interactive as possible. The Winter School concluded with a closing function addressed by Dr. Sreekumaran Nair and Dr. Ajay Bailey.
